This production of Hamlet was put on in 2019, directed by the award-winning David O’Donnell, (Associate Professor in Theatre at Victoria University of Wellington). David wanted to examine the eponymous lead role of Hamlet as performed by a woman; a noted that “a female Hamlet reflects Summer Shakespeare’s equal opportunity casting policy and reinforces the relevance of Shakespeare’s greatest writing to all of humanity.”
This performance was pre- Stevie’s coming out as trans nonbinary.
“Hancox-Monk’s performance as Hamlet is excellent – bringing a very visceral energy to a well-hewn character. It’s very rare that we get to see mad women – or at least, mad women who aren’t fridged in favor of masculine narratives – and it was a pleasure to watch. [They] captivate the audience, playing Hamlet with a welcome self-awareness, and gives one hell of a feminine badassery to a character we know so well.” — The Wellingtonista
“Hancox-Monk beautifully guides us through [their] thought processes and emotional upheavals. Hancox-Monk was simply a delight to watch, keeping me entertained at all times.” — Art Murmurs
"There is no moody introspection in Stevie Hancox-Monk's highly focused and light-on-[their]-feet Hamlet...[they are] totally 'woke', articulate, and forthright."…"impressive skill" — John Smythe, Theatreview
This production was performed by a large company, and featured critically acclaimed playwright Tawhi Thomas as Claudius.
Hamlet
One of Shakespeare’s most dynamic plays, built around its compelling, chameleon-like central character.
