ABOUT Stevie
Stevie Hancox-Monk (they/them) is a trans nonbinary theatre practitioner based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa. Their love for performance began after the rush of winning the Wairarapa Science Fair at age 12; the walk up onto the stage, the applause, the post-awards photoshoot… a hard pivot from science to the arts.
Stevie is also a voice artist, most notably for drag artist Hugo Grrrl’s The Glitter Garden, which won Production of the Year at the 2021 Wellington Theatre Awards. Stevie has read for Radio New Zealand: RNZ’s Page Numbers (Ahonen), and The Reading (The Girl Who Shaved the Moose; Lady Birds).
They have toured internationally, performing with the Prague Shakespeare Company in 2017 and going to the United States with The Griegol in 2023. Having started their training in improvisational comedy over 10 years ago, Stevie is a founding member of troupe Tiny Dog, who perform improvised comedy regularly in Te Whanganui-a-Tara and were nominated for Best Improv Group at the NZ Comedy Guild Awards, 2023.
Stevie has worked in a range of fields outside of the theatre, and highly values the two years they spent as a support worker for Active, a vocational service for youth with disabilities. They collaborated with theatre company Everybody Cool Lives Here to create award-winning show Wake Up Tomorrow with many of the people who attended Active. They were also an early contributor to Duncan Armstrong’s successful solo show Force Field.
As well as being an independent arts practitioner, Stevie works with Silver Noodle Soup Film & Theatre Company, a Wellington based non profit organisation where young disabled people are fully included in the leadership and direction of all aspects of theatrical and cinematic creativity, development, production, promotion and performance.
Stevie is also an Experience Designer for new company PickPath, which enables users to craft and share interactive app-guided experiences for their audience.
